Introduction: Depression and anxiety have essential role in the process and consequences of cancer disease. The role of Psychological treatments such as logo therapy in improving the negative emotions of patients with cancer has been less studied in the past. The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of group logotherapy on depression and anxiety in patients with cancer in a clinical trial study.
Methods: In a semi-experimental study (pre-test and post-test with control group), 30 patients with cancer were selected from Shahid Ghazi Tabatabaaei hospital of Tabriz by convenience sampling and assigned randomly to control and experimental groups. The experimental group received group logotherapy for ten sessions (every week lasting one hour), but the control did not receive any intervention. For the assessment of depression, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and for the assessment of anxiety, Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) were used before and after the intervention.
Results: The results showed that the logotherapy has significant effect on depression and anxiety of patients with cancer after controlling the pre -test effect. Moreover, logo therapy improves the affective and cognitive symptoms of cancer patients.
Conclusions: It can be conclude that interventional group logotherapy is effective in improving the negative emotions of cancer patients.
