Introduction: In today's world, new communication technologies play a significant role as a vital tool in healthcare. In this regard, this study aimed to review and analyze the physicians’ experiences regarding using new communication technologies by patients with special diseases.
Method: This exploratory and applied study was conducted based on a mixed-method approach, combining qualitative and quantitative data. In the qualitative phase, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 25 physicians familiar with communication technologies. These interviews aimed to examine physicians' experiences regarding the use of modern communication technologies by patients with special diseases. In the quantitative phase, a questionnaire was developed and distributed to gather physicians' opinions on the benefits and challenges of using these technologies by patients with special diseases. This questionnaire was completed by 339 physicians familiar with communication technologies. The obtained data were analyzed using confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling to examine the structure of relationships between variables and physicians' perspectives considering the advantages and challenges associated with the use of modern communication technologies by patients with special diseases.
Results: Qualitative interviews with physicians identified 136 subcategories and 41 categories, ultimately leading to the recognition of four main themes, namely opportunities, threats, strengths, and weaknesses. Opportunities include easy access to medical information, better care, and direct communication with the treatment team. Threats involve concerns about privacy and legal limitations. Strengths include reduced costs and improved services, while weaknesses pertain to inadequate infrastructure and regulations. Quantitative results showed that all sub-factors across various categories (opportunities, threats, strengths, and weaknesses) obtained mean scores higher than 3.5 and were statistically significant (P<0.05). These results were consistent with qualitative data from interviews with physicians and confirmed the validity of the study's findings.
Conclusion: The findings indicate that physicians have observed significant benefits of modern communication technologies for patients with special diseases, including improved access to health information, increased participation in treatment, and enhanced care quality. Major challenges include security and privacy concerns, as well as the need for training and support. Physicians believe that the benefits of these technologies outweigh their drawbacks, although the adoption rate among these patients is low. Effective utilization of these technologies requires attention to initial investment, technical limitations, cultural challenges, and legal changes.
