Introduction: Breast cancer is one of the most common chronic diseases among women and, in addition to physical complications, it leads to psychological consequences such as anxiety, depression, and reduced adherence to treatment. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of spiritual therapy and emotion-focused therapy on treatment adherence and coping styles in women with breast cancer.
Method: This semi-experimental study was conducted with a pre-test-post-test design and a control group. The statistical population included all women with breast cancer who referred to Imam Ali Hospital in Bojnourd, Iran, in 2024. Forty-five participants were selected through convenience sampling and randomly assigned to three groups: spiritual therapy, emotion-focused therapy, and a control group. Data collection tools included the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale and the Endler and Parker Coping Styles Questionnaire. Data were analyzed using multivariate analysis of covariance in SPSS (version 26).
Results: The results showed that both interventions, compared to the control group, significantly improved treatment adherence and enhanced adaptive coping styles. Spiritual therapy had the greatest impact on improving treatment adherence, while emotion-focused therapy was more effective in reducing maladaptive coping styles.
Conclusion: This study indicates that spiritual therapy, emphasizing meaning and hope, and emotion-focused therapy, focusing on processing suppressed emotions, can be used as complementary approaches to improve psychological adjustment in women with breast cancer.
