Introduction: Fertility tendencies and the number and interval of childbearing of employed women have decreased under the influence of their job status, quality of life, and happiness. Moreover, the fertility of midwives as providers of reproductive and childbearing health services can be a model for other women. Therefore, the present study aimed to determine the relationship between childbearing behaviors and happiness among employed midwives in 2022.
Method: The present descriptive-analytical study was conducted on 110 married midwives working in public hospitals in Isfahan, Iran using the multi-stage sampling method [cluster-available]. The information was collected using the questionnaires associated with personal-occupational information, childbearing behavior, and Oxford happiness. The content and face validity and reliability of the childbearing behavior questionnaire were confirmed [r=0.89]. The collected data were analyzed in SPSS software (version 22) using descriptive and inferential statistical tests [Pearson's correlation coefficient]. In this study, P values of less than 0.05 were considered statistically significant.
Results: The results showed that the average age of midwives was 34 years old, their desired number of children was 1.8, and the current number of children was 1.6. Average happiness score of the participants was 51.90 (low level), 81.8% of whom had a low happiness score. Furthermore, a significant and inverse correlation was observed between the happiness score and the number of children [P=0.43, r=1.2].
Conclusion: The results showed that the number of children of midwives has an inverse relationship with their level of happiness; accordingly, with an increase in the number of children, the happiness of midwives decreases. It seems that the midwives working in public hospitals are not in good condition and managers should monitor and plan to improve their status.
